The NPR Next Generation Radio Project is a week-long digital and audio journalism project that trains selected participants and gives them the opportunity to produce a multimedia story utilizing audio, visual and written elements. The Florida Newsroom Project took place Jan. 2-7, 2022. The theme of this year's project was "the impact of climate change on life."

‘They’re like family’: How one researcher is dedicated to preserving manatees

Florida’s manatees experienced a record number of deaths in 2021. Climate change, pollution and other human causes killed more than 1,000 of these gentle giants. Central Florida environmentalist Cora Berchem is on the frontlines of preserving these iconic creatures, keeping close tabs on their numbers and helping to protect them from further habitat loss, displacement and life-threatening weather patterns.
